Delhi’s hopes for improved air were short-lived with the air quality returning to the ‘poor’ category on Sunday. While Delhi’s AQI was classified as ‘moderate’ on Saturday with a reading of 161 — largely due to a western disturbance that brought rain — it shot up to 238 (poor) by 4pm on Sunday, with stubble burning affecting Delhi negatively once again. In fact, the contribution of stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana was the highest this season on Sunday, with 13% of Delhi’s PM2.5 concentration being due to the biomass burning in these states. Forecasting agencies say this is likely to worsen in the next 24 hours and the air quality could touch ‘very poor’ levels once again.
