Bans have feet of clay: Why PoP idols are here to stay
“Gareeb aadmi kya kare” — it’s an oft-repeated excuse that works everytime. Four years after National Green Tribunal prohibited the use of Plaster of Paris for making idols, the ban is being openly flouted across the city. Idol sellers have a market to cater to, and any number of warnings and bans don’t seem to be making a difference. TOI visited Patparganj and Samaspur in east Delhi and saw hundreds of Ganesha idols made of PoP — in different shapes and sizes — being sold at makeshift stalls on roadsides. More tellingly, most of the sellers we spoke to admitted that they knew such a ban existed.
